A political science and international studies student at UPEI has received FPEIM’s Gilbert C. Bell Memorial Award.

Joshua Maduka is a fourth-year honours student with first-class standing. After completing his undergraduate degree, he plans to head to law school and then practise in Canada.

“I am looking forward to specializing in international humanitarian law and conflict resolution, so I can serve people from around the world,” he says.

In a meeting with FPEIM President Bruce MacDougall, Joshua explained that he wants to help people who can’t speak for themselves.

He has also expressed his appreciation for the bursary. “As an international student who is handling all the bills by myself, things can get very overwhelming. I am very appreciative of this gift.”

Joshua, who is from Nigeria, came to PEI in 2019. In addition to his studies, he serves as co-chair and head of recruitment for the UPEI chapter of the World University Service of Canada, board member of the Black Cultural Society of PEI, and grant review committee member for the PEI Alliance for Mental Well-Being. He also helps fellow students through his employment as a UPEI student recruiter and first-year advisor.

“Joshua demonstrates both an impressive interest in policy and a dedication to service,” says MacDougall. “We are so pleased to see him recognized with this award and look forward to all he will accomplish.”
