The Federation of PEI Municipalities is pleased to see the release of the PEI government’s population framework and housing strategy.
“Planning is key to address the challenges that come with our record population growth,” says FPEIM President Bruce MacDougall. “Much of that growth is happening in PEI’s municipalities. They are vital partners in providing services that Islanders want and need.”
MacDougall notes that municipalities are essential to achieving the priorities in the provincial population framework. Depending on their capacity, municipalities may deliver infrastructure and public services, take climate action and carry out land use planning to promote sustainability, and enhance community connection. By creating sustainable, safe, and vibrant communities, municipalities can also contribute to the attraction and retention of the Island’s workforce.
The Federation was pleased to see the housing strategy include its Municipal Infrastructure Fund. The fund will help offset the costs of housing-related infrastructure such as water, wastewater, sidewalks, and roads; encourage development in rural service centres; and make housing a reality for more Islanders.
“Municipalities play key roles in meeting the priorities of both plans,” MacDougall says. “We look forward to working with the Province to promote sustainable development and serve PEI’s growing population.”
