A former Morell mayor known for his tireless work to encourage growth and expand services in his community has won the Bruce H. Yeo Memorial Award.
David MacAdam received the 2023 award at an event in his home community this weekend. The Federation of PEI Municipalities (FPEIM) award recognizes outstanding contributions to municipal government in Prince Edward Island.
David retired as mayor of the Rural Municipality of Morell in September, after serving for eight years. He had a career with the RCMP and PEI Mutual Insurance Company before “retiring” and becoming Morell’s mayor.
In addition to helping to encourage growth and expand services, he facilitated the efforts of other organizations that contribute to quality of life in the Morell area. Most recently, he was instrumental in developing infrastructure; encouraging the supply of affordable housing; and creating a new ballfield and having Fiona damage repaired at another one. He also advocated for municipal governments across PEI by serving on the FPEIM board.
Letters of support with his award nomination spoke to his dedication, collaboration, and quiet yet effective leadership. As one commenter noted, “David’s efforts are devoid of ego — he’s all about leaving the community a better place.”
“David is an outstanding municipal leader who has left a lasting legacy because of his work to build his community,” said FPEIM President Bruce MacDougall. “We are so pleased to honour him in this way.”
“Receiving the Bruce H. Yeo Award is an affirmation that rural municipalities and rural PEI are recognized as valuable to a healthy, vibrant province,” said David MacAdam, in response to the award. “The Federation of PEI Municipalities is providing an avenue where all the province grows together.”
