A Federation of PEI Municipalities and Clean Foundation project has helped two PEI municipalities create climate action plans through the support of the PEI Climate Challenge Fund.
Under the project, the Federation hired Danelle Finney on contract as a community climate advisor. She organized climate-related workshops for PEI municipalities and worked directly with the Town of Stratford and Rural Municipality of North Shore to write climate action plans.
“A climate action plan is about making a place more liveable over the long term,” Finney says, noting climate affects everything from quality of life to the economy of an area.
Each plan provides the municipality with a roadmap to reduce emissions, increase infrastructure resilience, respond to climate hazards, and make the most of natural spaces. The plans also incorporate municipal goals in areas like land use planning, emergency preparedness, transportation, buildings, stormwater, drinking water, and natural assets.
While both plans have some common themes, each one has been tailored to meet local needs. “We identified key priorities and actions that align with the unique needs and characteristics of each municipality,” Finney explains.
Writing the plans involved collaboration from municipal staff, councils, committees, and residents; as well as the provincial government, CLIMAtlantic, Winter River-Tracadie Bay Watershed Association, Stratford Area Watershed Improvement Group, and Graphcom.
Finney describes the plans as “living documents” that will evolve to ensure a sustainable future for residents.
FPEIM will continue to share announcements on each plan. The North Shore plan is now available here.
