Municipal leaders to discuss recreational levy at FPEIM meeting

PEI municipal leaders will consider a resolution on the creation of a provincewide recreational levy at the Annual General Meeting of the Federation of PEI Municipalities (FPEIM) on Monday.

A resolution submitted by the Town of North Rustico asks FPEIM to advocate to the Province for the “creation and implementation of an annual province-wide Recreational Levy from unincorporated areas, to be distributed in a manner that supports the fair and sustainable operation of municipal recreational facilities used by regional populations.”

The resolution notes the financial challenges that the Town of North Rustico experiences operating an arena that serves residents from 13 surrounding communities, while the operating costs fall upon municipal residents alone. Recognizing that other PEI municipalities face similar challenges operating recreational infrastructure, the resolution says, “it is increasingly apparent that municipalities require revenue streams from outside their boundaries to fairly support the costs of operating facilities that provide regional benefit.”

In addition to the debate on this resolution, the AGM will include presentations on an Indigenous perspective with community policing, land use, AI, and combatting climate misinformation; updates from political leaders; and information on FPEIM’s advocacy work and programs. Review the agenda here.

Hosted by the City of Summerside at Credit Union Place, the meeting is expected to attract more than 130 people, the majority being mayors and councillors from across the province.
