The Federation of Prince Edward Island Municipalities is pleased to see the provincial release of the State of the Island Report today.

“The Federation has long advocated for stronger land use policy on PEI,” says President Bruce MacDougall. “We support the provincial government’s commitment to a land use planning framework.”

Hon. Steven Myers, Minister of Housing, Land and Communities, announced the publication of the State of the Island Report, a key first step towards creating the provincial framework.

MacDougall said FPEIM appreciates the emphasis Minister Myers has placed on protecting the Island’s long-term interests by balancing growth, agricultural land protection, and climate change adaptation.

“We look forward to reviewing the report and collaborating on effective land use policy to preserve our vital resource of land.”

Minister Myers has also announced a review of the Municipal Government Act (MGA) and a corresponding consultation process. MacDougall said FPEIM looks forward to providing input on the MGA and working with the Minister to strengthen the legislation.

Finally, FPEIM was very pleased to see the Canada and PEI governments launch applications for the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund in PEI earlier this week. The federal-provincial agreement will provide close to $86.2 million in funding over ten years. “This funding will help offset the costs of infrastructure needed to build more homes for Islanders,” MacDougall said.
