FPEIM to host climate adaptation workshop

CHARLOTTETOWN – The Federation of PEI Municipalities will host a free workshop to help municipal councils and staff learn how retreat strategies and funding programs can assist in climate adaptation.

Managing Your Municipality’s Risks Through Climate Adaptation takes place Friday, June 23, 9:30 am to 2 pm, at the Delta Prince Edward in Charlottetown. The workshop includes two presentations:

Hope Parnham

Preventative and Proactive Adaptation: An Introduction to Managed Retreat for PEI Municipalities
Managed retreat can offer a cost-effective, long-term solution for municipalities with increased climate vulnerability. Hope Parnham, planner, landscape architect, and former provincial senior adaptation policy advisor, will help participants explore the concept of retreat as a response to sea level rise, coastal hazards, and inland flooding hazards. Participants will also learn to use the provincial Coastal Hazards Information Platform and other data resources for municipal decision-making.

Matt Delorme

Building Resilience: Proposal Writing for Climate Adaptation Projects
Municipalities often face challenges in funding adaptation projects to reduce infrastructure risk. Matt Delorme, professional engineer and executive director of the AIM Network, will help participants craft a funding proposal outline, start a roadmap to apply, and learn about funding programs. Participants will use their own examples of at-risk infrastructure to assess risk, develop a scope, identify resource gaps, estimate costs, and plan community engagement.

Cassandra Gautreau, climate project coordinator with CLIMAtlantic, will assist with both presentations. Participants are asked to bring a laptop computer and a specific example of infrastructure at risk due to climate change. Lunch will be provided.

FPEIM’s workshop partners include the Clean Foundation and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, through the Municipal Asset Management Program.

To register, email Danelle Finney, FPEIM community climate advisor, at dfinney@fpeim.ca by Monday, June 19, and indicate any dietary restrictions.
