Happy new year! Our board and staff wish you health and happiness in 2023.
The Federation of PEI Municipalities will begin 2023 with our Semi-Annual Meeting on Saturday, January 14, at the St. Peter’s Complex. In 2022, post-tropical storm Fiona demonstrated the dramatic effects of climate change and importance of emergency management planning.
Our meeting will give mayors, councils, and staff the chance to learn more about these timely issues – as well as the ever-popular topic of municipal law. Participants will also have the chance to tour the nearby Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation, gather with municipal representatives from across the province, and attend a brief business session. I encourage you to take advantage of this time to network and learn. The registration deadline is Friday, January 6.
Provincial Election
With a provincial election in the offing, 2023 will mark a critical year in our advocacy for municipalities. Many municipalities are struggling to find resources to satisfy governance requirements, respond to complex issues like housing, and meet higher demands on services. Issues of municipal capacity, municipal finance, and land-use planning will remain at the forefront.
The Federation will continue to work with the provincial government on solutions to address municipal issues and dialogue with all political parties to promote understanding and strategic policy platforms. As municipal representatives, you have an integral role to play in these efforts. Please share your experiences, concerns, and ideas with our office and election candidates.
We look forward to a productive year!
