Openness is a cornerstone of good governance. Until recently, municipalities in Prince Edward Island were governed by outdated legislation that lacked some of the accountability and transparency requirements commonly found in other jurisdictions. Despite these gaps, several municipalities have adopted progressive practices. To support and facilitate this modern approach to governance, the Federation has developed an Open Municipal Government Toolkit.
At the annual meeting last month, President Bruce MacDougall encouraged all municipalities to take advantage of this new resource, which is available at fpeim.ca. The Toolkit focuses on practices that support transparency, engagement and accountability, and provides a wealth of information for members of council and staff.
